Using XnView 0.79 on Windows 7 x64

Browsing into a directory with a ".pic" image file which has an unrecognized format (probably a Mac image file) XnView crashes.

Blurred thumbnails - where is sharpening?

Noticed that large thumbnails are blurred, vainly tried to find settings that will sharpen the thumbnails.
Q: where can I find it?

Meanwhile, I went into Settings->Browser->Catalog->db settings
Noticed a LOT, I mean a LOT of folders in the 'cached directory'.
[Delete All] button (at the bottom) didn't work. I could delete some cached folders of non-existing paths (paths to disconnected external USB drives)
There are sooo many folders still left under 'Cached Directory' - I would not know whether or not they all exist.
Anyway I clicked on 'Rebuild thumbnails' and it will take (quite) a while to do so.
Not sure whether that is the solution though.

attachment shows a preview by Directory Opus (left) and XnViewMP latest version, right.

Welcome to the forum, leandromarino (-:

If you click on a folder in the treeview with the right mouse button, you'll find the command Show all files (recursive) in the context menu.

Does it mean that XnView v.2.36 that I use still makes wrong scripts where absence of -q means -q 100 by default when it's -q 85 in current NConvert?

The NConvert help file gives q = 85 as the default setting:

Code: Select all
-q value          : JPEG/FPX/WIC/PDF quality (default : 85)

The q value used in XnView Classic will I think be the last value set, possibly defaulting to q = 100 when first installed, I'm not sure...

Does that answer your question?

If you need to post further code it would help if you could post it between code tags, as above, rather than as text on a screenshot... :D

Adjustable color reduction and color swap in palette

Hi,
i really like the color reduction tool in XnView, but i would sometimes need reduce amount of colors to little bit less than 256, but not so low as 128. At the moment there's no way to do that. Would be possible to add there simple slider or fillable box for adjusting the desired amount of colors?
Just one sidenote to color reduction tool - not sure how dithering method selection works when LIBIMAGEQUANT box is checked as i don't see any difference between dithering methods and when none is selected there is still some dithering noticable.

Also would be nice to have chance to do simple swap of position of 2 colors in "edit palette" tool. I need to have some of colors on fixed positions, but same time i don't want to loose any color from the actual palette. Selection of 2 colors (with ALT key?) and click on some "swap button" or do right-click and choose "swap" would be really handy.

thanks in advance

XnView Classic vs XnView MP

Following the installation of my new computer I try to use MP rather than Classic.
I think return to classic.

XnView Classic advantages:
- Smaller > and faster
- Webpage > this is an essentail function of XnView for me (other is images sort)
- Slideshow > I use sometime also

XnView MP advantages:
- Better UI > I don't think so
- x64bits > Good but light advantage for a image browser functionality

No there is no rating field in IPTC. Rating in XMP is a standard, hum a standard Microsoft & adobe use different setting :-(
And if you change the rating or color label, XMP is changed AND DB

Traduction:

I didn't force it, because the user account already has local admin rights.

Now I tried again with "Run as Administrator" and the checkbox keeps checked now, but it still doesn't work as there is no option/submenu in the context menus.

EDIT: Additionally, jumplists on taskbar icons won't work anymore. If I disable the checkbox in XnConvert, the jumplists are working again. So this seems like a bug.

Ah, you asked originally about sharpening, and I see that in XnView MP that option can be found in Tools > Options > Browser > Thumbnails -- Misc tab:idea:

External delete of image files leaves database inconsistent

Hi,

completely agree! People have been asking for that for years. If Picasa did not have it I would even side with developer saying that auto refresh is not possible. Considering Picasa is now killed because Google is all about the cloud there is not much alternatives. That should be opportunity for XnView to seize it and not the other way around. Also if we had this feature that should not be my first post either :)

Extend NConvert with a custom format

xnview wrote:what do you have as source? A 16bits image?

Up to 32Bits, though most are 16-24-Bit PNGs. I'm pretty sure NConvert does support them already, so whats missing is only the raw option, because I thought NConvert has an internal format that the converter converts to and from there is able to convert to any output format, right? So it shouldn't matter...

I see. Have you taken a closer look at Tools» Import and sort... and the cataloging features?

It would also be very interesting to have into this Xnview DB the "taken Date" EXIF field , to also have the ability to automatically and quickly generate the full "recursive" photo album (from data already registered into the Xnview DB) automatically sorted by taken date & time like:
Code: Select all

Request: Actions > File Operations

First use and XnConvert is amazing - thank you!

I would like to be able to perform a sequence of actions on a master image and export different versions to multiple destinations.

Feature request: A new category of Actions > File Operations. The new actions would essentially contain many of the same options provided in the "Output" tab. However by making this tab an Action, I could efficiently perform multiple operations on a single file. The Output tab would then become redundant.

Other file actions could include touch, delete and duplicate.

Sorting Folders by Date Taken

Thank you for the information and links.

For others looking to do the same thing as me, please note that I have tried every single image organiser out there. Everything from the big shots (Adobe, Corel) to shareware (ACDSee, Phototheca) to freeware (Digikam, Faststone, XnView). That's just naming a few, I must have tried out over 20 and have gone through every program on alternativeto.net and all the internet lists I could find.

Out of all of those, only Phototheca (and of course Picasa) sort folders by looking at the EXIF dates of the images inside them. Picasa is the most polished, fast and easy to use. It is also able to change image dates for a range of images by a certain margin, instead of a single date/time value. I dislike Phototheca's iPhoto wannabe GUI and it is slow in usage and makes my AV go crazy.

I even would have sold my soul to the devil with Adobe etc if any of them worked the way I wanted.

As of now, this is not possible to do in XnView or XnViewMP.

XnViewMP gives me the most hope and that's why I am here. It's well written and fast but unusable for me for now. If anyone added this as a plugin or something to XnViewMP or can recommend another program, I would happily pay $200 for it.
