This is a follow-up to my recent posting "Error in writing XMP Metadata for Comments" (http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=32980). I use XnViewMP in conjunction with Photoshop Elements 14. The following would help deal with metadata inconsistencies with between Photoshop Elements, Windows, and XnViewMP that I’ve had to deal with.
Proposed solution:Provide another option check box on the XnViewMP “Edit IPTC-IIM/XMP” option screen to have XnViewMP also write the Caption into “EXIF:ImageDescription” (in addition to the IPTC:Caption-Abstract and/or XMP-dc:Description fields as you do now).
This would be consistent with what Photoshop Elements does, and would solve a problem in display of the caption in Windows properties. I have had to write an ExifTool script that I run after editing captions in XnViewMP to deal with this inconsistency. Photoshop Elements writes a caption to EXIF:ImageDescription, IPTC:Caption-Abstract, and XMP-dc:Description. XnViewMP
only writes the caption to IPTC:Caption-Abstract and/or XMP-dc:Description (depending on the option set). So if I've previously saved a caption using Photoshop Elements and then later update the caption using XnViewMP, the old caption in EXIF:ImageDescription is still left behind. Unfortunately Windows properties shows that field in preference to either IPTC:Caption-Abstract or XMP-dc:Description. “Title” in Windows Properties will not list the updated caption until I run my ExifTool script to delete or update the old EXIF:ImageDescription data which was put there by Photoshop Elements previously.
Providing an option check box on the XnViewMP “Edit IPTC-IIM/XMP” option screen to also write the caption to EXIF:ImageDescription, in addition the other fields selected on that screen, would solve this problem by updating the field as well.
Alternatively, another solution would be for XnViewMP to always totally delete any old EXIF:ImageDescription field that exists whenever writing a caption, thus removing any old EXIF:ImageDescription field previously written by Photoshop Elements that would interfere with the new caption being displayed by Windows. This would perhaps be simpler for users in general in that they wouldn’t have to decide on another option box to select, not understating the relationships I’ve described here.
A third alternative would be to update EXIF:ImageDescription always like Photoshop Elements does, but I’m thinking that if you update this field you may need to provide a way to disable this for some users, hence my first proposed solution above where I’ve suggested a check box to select the option.
I have found it very useful to add columns in Windows File Explorer for “Title” and “Comments” for easy display of Captions and Comments. But this issue, along the bug reported in my previous post regarding display of comments, requires that I run my ExifTool fix-it script often in order for Captions and Comments in the File Explorer listings to be correct.
PS: Metadata interoperability between various tools can be very tricky. For instance, the above assumes in Photoshop Elements I enter caption information in Organizer using “Caption”, or in Photoshop Elements Editor using document “Description”. If you also enter a “Document Title” in Photoshop Elements Editor then yet another interfering field, XMP:Title, is introduced which also interferes with displaying the caption on Windows. I avoid this issue by avoiding the use of the "Document Title" field in Photoshop Elements Editor.
Thanks,
