Alpha Channel and 24-bit BMP images

Perhaps you can set the two colours of the checkboard pattern both to white (or any other colour) and thus achieve what you want. Just an idea...

Menu "Tools > Settings" | Category "View" | [x] Use checkboard pattern as background

EDIT: From what I can see Paint uses different colours as transparent colour - depending on the image.
