Just to help others who may experience this issue:

What actually helped in my case was deleting the xnview.ini (that over years has grown to 25,5 kb) and setting up XnViewMP from scratch. I tried to recreate all the previous settings which resulted in the xnview.ini size 12,9 kb. The annoyance on slow start is gone (and I've been experiencing that for a long, long time across many versions).
