Deleting things from the /tmp folder in Linux is usually not a good idea, because a lot of files or symlinks may be in use. Now in relation to the issue, did you check your access permission on that folder? maybe you don't have the rights to erase stuff in there, also, it depends on the distro. As an example, I'm currently using OpenSuse, tried to repro the problem you cite (both : DEL key and Edit -> Delete) and file was gone, checked both terminal and Xnview, the files were gone.
Maybe there is another process or the files are locked by the system.
