I would suggest testing an Adjust > Levels... adjustment in the viewer to see if you can find settings that are better, and also Adjust > Shadows/Highlight... . In the Image > Map menu you also have Automatic contrast and an Old camera setting... you could try [I'm not sure if that is effectively a gamma adjustment, which you could try if you find one
